Commissioner of the IRS Wage and Investment Division (W&I)

Rick Byrd Jr., serves as the commissioner of the IRS Wage and Investment division and oversees the administration of tax laws governing individual wage earners in the United States. W&I serves approximately 122 million customers accounting for 94 million tax returns.

Rick started his career in 1975 as a co-op inspector in the IRS Inspection Service, headquartered in Chicago, where he rose through the ranks to a group supervisory position in 1985 and was promoted to Washington, D.C., in 1987. He received an appointment to the Senior Executive Service in 1990 and graduated from the IRS Executive Development Program in 1995.

Rick, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, received their Outstanding Alumnus Award, an award given to an alumnus who has made a significant impact in the government or private industry. He also is an executive advisor to CFIRE and a member of AIM and HIRE employee organizations.
