Let's get started. Did you know the Charities and Nonprofits webpage links to hundreds of pages of helpful information?

It's the place you go to if you're: Someone looking for information on a charity you’d like to donate to; an employee of a charity or other tax-exempt organization who needs help completing annual filings; someone who wants an employer identification number to apply for tax-exempt status; or, a nonprofit organization thinking about federal tax-exempt status.

Whatever your question, our mission at the IRS Exempt Organizations, or EO, is to help our customers understand their tax responsibilities and find information about tax-exempt organizations. To reach EO’s page, you can: type IRS.gov/charities in your browser or go to IRS.gov and click on the "Charities and Nonprofits" tab; or if you’re using a mobile device - you can also select “Charities and Nonprofits” under Menu.

Here's our Charities and Nonprofits home page. We developed it to make it easy for you to learn about setting up a charity or nonprofit tax-exempt organization or help you maintain your organization’s tax-exempt status.

In the center of our homepage, you’ll find eight categories of information to help set up and maintain a charity or nonprofit.

Under the first category you’ll find our online tool, Tax Exempt Organization Search (we call TEOS). Click on “Search Organizations” if you’d like to know about a tax-exempt organization’s federal tax status and filed returns. You can also find a link to this tool under Search for Charities on the left side of our homepage.

under more and file on your mobile device. Under the second category Annual Filing and Forms, we offer information on required filing of Form 990 series returns. You’ll find resources to help you determine which form or notice your organization should file, common errors, frequently asked questions, and other helpful links.

The third category, Employer Identification Number, walks you through the process of applying for an EIN, which you need to apply for tax-exempt status and filling returns Under the fourth category Tax Exemption, you’ll find a wealth of information about how to apply or reapply for tax-exempt status, including what forms to use. Browse the “Apply for Tax-Exempt Status” page to see our top ten tips to shorten the tax-exempt application process process and Sample application questions to help you complete your application. Also in this section, we have a link to Lifecycle of an EO; where you’ll learn about the five major stages in an exempt organization’s life cycle: Starting Out, Applying for Exemption, Required Filings, Ongoing Compliance, and Significant Events.

We grouped our information into these five lifecycle stages and wrote topics for different types of exempt organizations including private foundations, public charities, social welfare organizations, and others. You’ll also find a link to Lifecycle of an Exempt Organization on the left side of our homepage or under “More In File” on a mobile device. The third link you'll find here is Reinstate Tax-Exempt Status with information on what to do if your tax-exempt status is revoked.

Under Charitable Contributions, you’ll learn about tax-deductible charitable contributions. Here you’ll link to information about Organizations Eligible to Receive Tax-Deductible Charitable Contributions, Tax Information on Donated Property, Substantiating Charitable Contributions, Tips for Taxpayers Making Charitable Donations and Special Charitable Contributions for Certain IRA Owners. Also in this section, Noncash Charitable Contributions, has information on making charitable contributions of property.

Our Exempt Organization Types category links to information on Charitable Organizations, Churches and Religious Organizations, Private Foundations, Political Organizations and Other Nonprofits. The Other Nonprofits link directs you to “Tax Information for Other Nonprofits” including Requirements for Exemption for different types of tax-exempt organizations under the Code.

Check out the seventh category on this webpage, Education. Here you’ll find Education Resources and Guidance – we offer virtual training, official guidance, publications, forms and instructions, educational resources, live training and quick links.

StayExempt.IRS.gov is a series of short mini courses for new and existing tax-exempt organizations. It offers educational presentations especially for 501(c)(3) exempt organizations (or charities). For example, there’s a 10-course, interactive workshop for organizational leaders, volunteers and anyone applying for tax-exempt status to help you understand the benefits, limitations and expectations of being a tax-exempt organization.
